Mapping (and Hearing) Historic Ballard

Two of BHS’s major projects in the last decade were data surveys that resulted in searchable, interactive maps. Our goal for these maps is to digitally store the stories of these locations, the homes, their history, and in our most recent project, the actual voices.

Revisiting Early Ballard

Launched in 2022, this interactive map shows places associated with the personal and oral histories of 40 Ballard residents (circa 1988). Explore the map by clicking on marked locations or selecting a resident from the site’s dropdown menu. From there, you can read transcripts of fascinating oral histories and view associated documents.

Mapping Historic Ballard

Launched in 2018, this interactive web map presents the results of the volunteer-driven crowd-sourced data collection effort to inventory all of the pre-1965 buildings in Ballard. Click a parcel to see a photo of the building, as well as a list of structural and site characteristics.
