Letter from the Board

Welcome to the Ballard Historical Society's Web site! We invite you to explore the site and learn about our organization and our historic neighborhood.

With a history that predates Seattle as a city, Ballard is unique in its independent industrial/manufacturing base. Until annexation to Seattle in 1907, Ballard had its own city government, complete with City Hall and Mayor. Our photographic archive, with over 700 images, documents this interesting history. We are thrilled to announce that the archive is now available to the general public through our website.

From its inception in 1988, the Ballard Historical Society has been an organization comprised of people interested in historic research and the architectural preservation of Ballard homes and landmarks. Members have worked with other Ballard organizations to produce two publications: Passport to Ballard, a pictorial history in honor of Ballard's Centennial and Voices of Ballard, a compilation of oral histories from long time Ballard residents. Our very popular Old House Tour showcases the varied styles evident in Ballard residential architecture.

Our organization also has presented various historical exhibits and programs. In addition, we have produced a detailed Walking Guide of Ballard, which takes readers back in time as they learn about the rich history of the downtown area. These are just a few examples of our work. If you are interested in becoming a part of the Ballard Historical Society please click on "become a member".

Thanks for visiting.
